Mission
Caritas Somalia’s mission is to end poverty, promote social justice and uphold human dignity. Also, it responds to catastrophes such as drought, floods, famine and armed conflicts.

Vision
Inspired by the Holy Scriptures, by the social teachings of the Catholic Church, by the mission of Caritas Internationalis, UN Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and by the life experiences and the hopes of people living in poverty and other inhuman conditions, Caritas Somalia strives for a world where the voices of the poor are heard and acted upon, where each person is free to flourish and live in peace and dignity. We work with people of all faiths and with those who have none, in favour of discriminated people and those living in poverty.
Values
The charity work of Caritas Somalia is motivated and animated by the following values and principles which help it to live its mission as a Catholic Church based organization. Getting inspiration from the Church, Caritas Somalia is committed to these following values:
Dignity of the human person
Caritas Somalia believes in the intrinsic dignity and equality of every human person and the sacredness of human life. Thus we categorically reject the objectification or exclusion of the poor, disabled, elderly, or any other vulnerable members of the one human family.
Preferential option for the poor
Caritas Somalia combats dehumanising poverty that deprives people of their dignity and promotes the rights of poor and vulnerable people. Caritas Somalia accompanies them as they rediscover their sense of self-worth and dignity and assume co-responsibility in building a better world for all.
Subsidiarity and participation
All people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives.
Respect
Caritas Somalia respects various religious traditions, culture, structures and customs in so far as they enhance and uphold the dignity of the human person.
Integral human development
Caritas Somalia views development as based on a holistic understanding of the human person, within the context and experience of the family and the wider community, embracing spiritual, psychological, emotional, physical, material and economic elements. Caritas Somalia strives for the development of the whole person and the whole community, and for the transformation of unjust social systems. In our work we ensure strong and consistent links between relief, rehabilitation and developmental components.
Mercy and compassion
Caritas Somalia is compelled to take action to alleviate misery and pain. Mercy is a Gospel value that is central to the message of Jesus and forms those engaged in the work of Caritas to be loving and compassionate.
Common Good and partership
The enjoyment of human dignity and ability to grow in community is affected by the way we organize our society: socially, religiously, culturally, economically, ecologically, legally and politically. We work aware of the universal destination of goods according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, in partnership with other religious traditions, governments, wider civil society and all in authority: we want to protect human dignity, fulfill individual and social rights and responsibilities, by promoting the Common Good.
Solidarity
Caritas Somalia is committed to solidarity among all peoples, but particularly with poor people, seeing the world through their eyes, and recognising the interdependence of the human family. Solidarity includes the persevering determination to work for the common good.
Integral ecology
As a basic ethical principle and a responsibility, understanding that the environment, the economy, the society, our daily life, the common good and justice between generations are interconnected, Caritas Somalia not only works to eradicate poverty and social exclusion today, but firmly commits itself to sustainable development, the stewardship of a sound ecological order and simplicity of life.
Religious freedom and cultural diversity
Religious freedom is a fundamental human right. It is enhanced by an appreciation for cultural diversity. Caritas Somalia is committed to the multi-level dialogue and collaboration among faiths and cultures towards the common good.
Fraternity and Gratuitousness
Caritas is led by the basic values of fraternity and solidarity, which express the equal dignity of all human beings: equality between women and men, between people of different ethnicities, different places of origin, different religious beliefs, different capacities and different socio-economic status. The free, gratuitous and loving contribution of every person to the common good, for example through volunteering, supports and fosters community building. Love, seeking the integral development of every human being and of the entire human family, is a right and a responsibility of every person and community.
